What's YOUR Favorite Memory of Panama City Beach?

Your-Panama-City-Beach-Bum My home town, Panama City Beach, AKA “Spring Break Central", with its Hotels and Condos, has attracted millions to its sugary sands over time. Today, many changes have redirected the once familiar landscape. There are still plenty of great Restaurants and awesome Real Estate. However, change is happening so fast, it’s hard for even someone (like me) who grew up here to recognize where the memories actually took place.

P.C.B. is where some of us got our first kiss or, perhaps, rode the Ferris wheel for the first time or...did something our Mamma would NOT approve of.

Who can forget the tower at Miracle Strip? Oh! And the Old House at Miracle Strip Amusement Park…and an even earlier memory: The “Hang Out” at Long Beach Resort! This was the place to find friends and meet new people long before the Spinnaker Beach Club and Sharkies existed.

Captain Ira Marshall

Panama City’s Beaches are, you might say, in my blood. My grandfather, Captain Ira Marshall, was a Seaman who grew up here, was a boat builder extraordinaire and Captain of the Ferry Boat which was the only way to get from St. Andrews to the Beaches in his day.

My mother was born on, “Red Fish Point” known now as "Tyndall Air Force Base" -- it's out there by Shell Island. (Don't be surprised if you see our finest Jet Pilots fly over during your visit.) My grandmother loved living on Red Fish Point because of her neighbors, the Hawk Massalina family. Hawk Massalina was an African American and prominent Panama City ship builder and fisherman. With no other family, the Massalinas became my grandmother's life-line.

condos on the beach

During my teen years, when Labor Day weekend rolled around, the tourists all went home and the businesses were then boarded up for the winter. The dead-line for FUN was Labor Day weekend. If you didn't get your share by then, you would have to wait until Spring Break rolled around again.

During the 70's (my hay-day), practically no one visited, or lived, at the beach during the winter months. All of the roads, in and out of Panama City Beach, were two-lane roads. It was small in comparison but we certainly had a lot of fun! Be sure and take a look at the special video from that era on this site.

Wow! Who could know that Panama City Beach would turn into one of the most visited places in the Southeast? Today, Panama City is being peddled as the number one place in the Southeast for growth in the first part of the 21st Century. Who Knew?

Modern-Hathaway-Bridge

The days of Captain Marshall’s Ferry Boat to Panama City Beach and Shell Island are ancient history. Today, thousands pass over St. Andrew's Bay on the modern Hathaway Bridge and Fly-Over . As I write this, the Panama City International Airport is being built. I remember when that place was just a swamp with lots of mosquitoes and sand-gnats!

What’s that old saying, “You can never go home again.”? Well, that is partly true; but, I am here to show you all of the reasons why Panama City Beach is always a great choice for your family’s vacation, weekend retreat, girls’ beach weekend or Wild-Child-Revenge. There’s something in Panama City for everyone; an ideal place to make memories that last a life-time.
